The Crown and Cushion, situated in the historic Cumbrian town of Appleby, has reopened following a joint investment worth over £200k from Robinsons Brewery and licensees Janice MacRae, Lee Turnbull and Lewis MacRae.
Renowned for its delicious pub classics - including Dowding’s Cumberland Sausage Ring and Wholetail Scampi - the Crown and Cushion was closed for 5 weeks whilst Robinsons carried out an extensive, stylish refurbishment. The pub has been dramatically restructured, with walls removed and floor levels altered to improve the customer journey, and to offer direct vision to the striking new bar.
The Crown and Cushion now boasts a timeless up-to-date feel, appealing to a range of customers. A new door has also been built from the entrance lobby directly into the side room which now operates during the daytime as the 'Appleby Tearooms' - the town’s first premier tea room.

'The pub offers three super fully refurbished en-suite pub bedrooms and the whole area itself has been transformed into a relaxed, stylish pub. Our first few weeks of trading were outstanding in all areas and the refurbishment has been welcomed by the whole town.”
The pub has retained its charm, with existing beams sandblasted back to their original form to enhance the pub’s natural character, along with original stone walls which were restored to their former glory, presenting an array of textures throughout. Featured glazed screen dividers have also been added to create cosy pockets of space to relax in.
The pub now offers an ideal drinking and dining experience, with new seating and casual dining spaces together with feature pendant mood lighting over tables, creating the perfect place to relax in the evening and sample some of the Crown’s multiple award-winning cask ales and craft beers.
A new dazzling polished panelled bar counter was also added with a new back bar to showcase the fantastic new premium drinks range. High quality timber flooring has also been fitted with loose rugs to soften the area.
