Burger King becomes first UK fast food firm to sell alcohol

A Burger King restaurant in Bury St Edmunds has been granted a license to sell alcohol, making it the first fast food restaurant company in the UK to do so.

Despite objections from the local police, the Suffolk branch has been granted the license which will allow it to sell alcohol from 10am-11pm. However, only one beer per adult is allowed to be served until 9pm. Further rules include all drinks be served in plastic bottles and drinks purchased have to be drunk inside over fears from police of increased crime and disorder.

Burger King has now announced it has also applied for alcohol licenses for its restaurants in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Blackpool and Hull, but these are still under consideration.

The company already sells alcohol in some parts of the US, Singapore, Venezuela and Spain in its high-end Whopper Bars which were launched in 2009 in an aim to compete with the more fast-casual dining restaurants.
