Scotmid has responded to a growing consumer trend for frozen food that's a cut above the rest with the introduction of a brand-new locally-produced frozen range across selected Aberdeenshire stores.
The convenience retailer continues its partnership with Castleton Farm, a local, family-run business, which has launched its brand-new frozen food range in Scotmid’s Inverbervie and Laurencekirk stores as part of an initial trial.
The new range comprises a variety of vegan, Asian inspired and traditional meals, including a Wild Mushroom Risotto, Teriyaki Chicken, Meatballs in a Red Pepper Sauce and a Beef Stroganoff. There are plans for seasonal changes to range.
The move reflects two key areas of growth for Scotmid. It supports the retailer’s focus on expanding the business through innovation and partnership working in response to increased demand for locally sourced, great quality produce.
Furthermore, it reflects a wider consumer trend for top-of-the-range frozen food and ready meals, which offer great value for money, a longer shelf life and leave less waste. This trend has been amplified by the pandemic and a re-energised focus of new product development, which has generated a sizeable new following amongst discerning consumers.
The trial has been partially funded by the Scottish Grocers Federation Go Local programme, which aims to support convenience stores across Scotland to provide dedicated, long-term display space for locally-sourced Scottish produce.
Funding from the programme has already supported Scotmid’s investment in - and launch of - The Butchery at Scotmid’s Broxburn store, which has been welcomed by customers eager to sample the top-quality meats and meals on offer.
Anna Mitchell, Owner of Castleton Farm, (pictured right) said, “Introducing our frozen products to Scotmid customers is a huge step for us and we’re grateful for the support we have received from Scotmid.
'We value their commitment to supporting independent businesses such as ourselves and we’re excited for customers in Aberdeenshire to try our new frozen range.”
Kirsty Carnegy, Head of Local Sourcing at Scotmid, (pictured left) added, “As a convenience retailer, we are continually looking for ways we can improve, enhance and expand our customer offering on many different levels.
“We have had a close working relationship with Castleton Farm for a number of years and are delighted to have worked closely with them to develop their new frozen range for our stores. The range is already proving popular with customers.”
