Marking its 25th anniversary, Meadowhall Shopping Centre in Sheffield is to undergo a £50m refurbishment, starting in September.
BDP’s architects, interior designers and lighting designers were appointed by British Land for the refurbishment in April this year, working alongside WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff who has been appointed to provide multidisciplinary engineering services.
Owned by British Land, the UK's fourth-largest shopping centre opened in 1990 on the site of a former steelworks.
Claire Barber, Head of Shopping Centre Asset Management for British Land, said, “Across the retail portfolio, we are investing in our assets to ensure they reflect the way people shop today. The refurbishment of Meadowhall will reposition the centre to appeal to premium and lifestyle retailers as well as a broader range of customers.”
Garry Wilding architect director at BDP said, “Our proposals create distinct districts with different mall finishes. New double height frontages, the removal of columns and arches, improved flooring, wayfinding, signage and feature lighting artwork will all go towards creating a modern, exciting shopping environment.”
The project, which comprises 310 shops, 50 restaurants and cafes and a multi-screen cinema, will complete by the end of 2017. The work will be largely undertaken out of hours to ensure that retailers and customers continue to have a positive experience.
