Leon launches Fairtrade & Organic coffee range

Leon has announced the launch of its Fairtrade certified and organic coffee in Sainsbury’s supermarkets across the country on 23 May, including ground and whole bean.

Continuing to offer coffee that tastes good and does good thanks to its long-standing relationship with Puro Fairtrade Coffee and the World Land Trust, Leon coffee will now be available in over 1,000 distribution points nationwide.

The coffee is available in Blonde Roast (200g ground), with notes of smooth caramel and hints of citrus, and Dark Roast (200g whole bean and ground) with a full, well-balanced flavour with spicy undertones.

Leon coffee connoisseurs take note, the Dark Roast coffee bags are the same flavour, you’ll know and love as found served in the Leon restaurants. The range uses 100% Arabica beans from Peru and Honduras.

Reinforcing Leon’s mission to help the planet whilst offering great quality coffee, each Leon coffee bag purchased will help save 4m2 of rainforest in Tanzania, in partnership with the World Land Trust.

What’s more, Leon restaurant customers will also be supporting World Land Trust conservation projects in restaurants, with every seven cups of coffee helping save 1m2 of Tanzanian rainforest.

Leon has been working with Puro and the World Land Trust since their foundation in 2005. Through the amount of coffee served via its restaurants to date, Leon has directly helped save over 8 million m2 (2,183 acres) of rainforest or around 564,282 trees.

With the addition of the Sainsbury’s coffee range, Leon intends to save a further 5 million m2 (1,236 acres), protecting approximately 209,080 trees in the next two years. The Rondo Forest Reserve, a hotspot with the most single-site endemic plant and animal species among the East African Coastal Forest, is included in this work.

Furthering its commitment to protecting biodiversity, through the relationship with the WLT, Leon has helped fund the purchase and protection of a mountain forest reserve in Western Honduras, near to where its coffee is grown, that’s subsequently been named Leon De Montaña in their honour.

Ashley Davis, Managing Director of Leon Grocery, said, “It’s always been our mission to offer food that tastes good and does good, so we’re proud to now offer our triple-certified coffee1 in partnership with long-standing partner Puro in over 1,000 stocking points across 493 Sainsbury’s stores across the country.

'The partnership with the World Land Trust also means that our customers can enjoy our coffee and at the same time help conserve and protect Tanzanian rainforest and primate corridors.”

Andy Orchard, marketing manager at Puro, said, “What we have here is a beautifully balanced coffee, striving further than taste by blending give and take, a morning habit that enlivens our lives, whilst conserving life in the natural world in the tropics within which coffee flourishes. This is truly cause for celebration, and it’s incredible to see Leon bringing it to the shelves of Sainsbury’s.”

The triple-certified coffee is Fairtrade, which guarantees a fairer price for farmers, is organic, which means it’s better for you and for the planet, and it supports the World Land Trust. Unlike most coffee brands on the market, Leon coffee packaging is fully recyclable by returning it to larger Sainsbury’s stores.

The Blonde and Dark Roast coffee joins the growing Leon Grocery range, which already includes sauces that ‘#justhappenstobevegan’, plant-rich dips, restaurant favourites in the form of frozen waffles fries and Gluten-Free Chicken Nuggets, and ready meals - allowing more people to enjoy naturally fast food at home.

Finally, this June, Leon is also launching a coffee through letterboxes with twin packs of 200g bags across beans and ground for the cost of £12, including P&P. A restaurant coffee subscription is also available and priced at £15 per month.
