The Coconut Tree chain launches new plant-based dishes for Veganuary

Pioneering Sri-Lankan restaurant group, The Coconut Tree is introducing three new plant-based dishes to its menu, to celebrate Veganuary.

Available from today, 4 January 2022, the new dishes add to the existing plant-based options available on the menu, which is naturally abundant in vegan options.

The new vegan dishes on offer at the group’s nine restaurants (in Cheltenham, Bristol, Oxford, Cardiff, Bournemouth, Reading, Bath and Birmingham) are:

• Brinjals Moju - Proudly pickled Brinjals (aubergine) make up this sweet, sour, ‘warm-not-hot’ relish.
• Gova Mallun - Cabbage is sliced & pan fried with onions, garlic, turmeric, black pepper & a smatter of warm chili flakes.
• Straight Up Bonchi – Green beans are tossed in coconut oil, curry leaves & chilli flakes, then flash fried with toasted coconut chunks and served ‘al dente.’

The new dishes joins a menu of tapas-style plates which includes ‘Hoppers’ – a bowl shaped coconut milk pancake served with sambal & Sri Lankan Salsa; ‘Cashew Nuts’ and green peas soaked and cooked in coconut cream; and a firm favourite, their ‘Fat Sister Pumpkin Curry’ made with fragrant curry leaves, garlic and green chilli.

Meanwhile, the vegan ‘Kotthu’ is a fine example of a local hybrid served all over Sri Lanka as a luxurious street food, made with finely chopped rotti cooked with a variety of fresh vegetables.

All of The Coconut Tree’s dishes (including the three new vegan dishes) will be available for ‘click & collect’ thanks to a new, simplified online ordering system from Yoello.

For those giving ‘Dry January’ a go this year, The Coconut Tree has it covered with their recently relaunched ‘Cocotail’ menu (available to customers who ‘eat-in’ only) which includes three alcohol-free creations:

• The new Sunrise Surprise is a heady mix of Tanqueray 0% mixed with Nix Kix Blood Orange & Turmeric; a lightly sparkling drink with a touch of cayenne.
• The Pi-No Colada is a non-alcoholic version of the island classic; rich coconut cream & fresh pineapple juice, served in a freshly carved pineapple.
• The Fallen Porn Star blends Seedlip botanicals with passion fruit puree, pineapple juice, coconut and pineapple syrup.
