M&J Seafood supplies first sustainable king prawns in UK foodservice

Brakes-owned M&J Seafood, the UK’s largest independent seafood supplier, has launched ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) King Prawns, the first king prawns in UK foodservice to be certified responsibly farmed and sustainable.

Recent analysis by Fish2fork and the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) reported that high street restaurants and pubs need to do more to prevent seafood being overfished. King prawns and other tropical prawns were, once again, identified as one of the most problematic types of seafood used by restaurants and pubs.

Fish2fork and MCS encourage restaurants to use certified supplies but too often they either fail to do so or fail to make it clear to customers what their source is.

The M&J Seafood ASC King Prawns have minimal glaze and no additives, and are supplied raw, peeled and deveined in 1kg bags. Caterers can simply defrost, thaw and cook for an easy starter or main course dish. Chefs can also flag up the ASC status of the prawns on the menu to show customers that they are serious about sustainable fish and seafood.
