Greggs launches vegan steak bake

Following on from the success of its vegan sausage roll in 2019, bakery and cafe chain, Greggs has today launched its meat-free steak bake.

The vegan version of the high street bakers’ snack uses Quorn pieces in place of beef, dried onions, a gravy filling and is coated in 96 layers of dairy-free puff pastry.

The new edition is healthier than its meat-filled counterpart, too, containing 380 calories compared with 408 calories. However, customers will have to pay a premium for the healthier pasty, which costs an extra 10p at £1.55.

The vegan steak bake is on sale in 1,300 branches nationwide, and will be in the remaining 700 outlets from 16 January.

Roger Whiteside, chief executive, said, “Our vegan sausage roll launch was a huge success and we’ve been working tirelessly to expand our vegan friendly offering and provide more delicious savoury food on-the-go options for people looking to reduce their meat intake.

“The launch of our Vegan Steak Bake is another key milestone on our journey to become our customers’ favourite for food-on-the-go. We look forward to hearing the feedback.”

The launch comes as over 100,000 people have already pledged to stick to a plant-based diet for Veganuary, double the number who took part last year.
