Pret A Manger launches its first vegan croissant

Pret A Manger today announces that it will launch a new breakfast menu item, The Very Berry Croissant, which is made to a vegan recipe. The item will be on sale at Pret and Veggie Pret shops nationwide from 7 January.

Over 20 million croissants are sold at Pret every year, and this marks the first time that the business will sell a vegan-friendly option. Following months of development and numerous customer requests, the Food Team at Pret have created a vegan recipe for the French breakfast pastry synonymous with butter.

The Very Berry Croissant uses margarine and sunflower oil to re-create the buttery, light texture of a traditional croissant. The pastry is then filled with a deliciously sweet berry compote and finished with a sprinkling of sugar, making for a breakfast treat that is a great option for customers participating in Veganuary or those keen to try something new.

Pret’s Global Head of Food Innovation, Hannah Dolan, said, “Over the past couple of years we’ve worked hard to bring new vegan and veggie options to our menu. The launch of The Vegan Classics in Veggie Pret has been a real success but we knew from talking to our customers that it was time to bring more options to the breakfast menu.

“The Very Berry Croissant is just the beginning - we are looking forward to sharing more plant-based innovations with customers in 2020.”

Pret has also announced that from 7 January 2020 oat milk will be available in all shops for customers to order in barista prepared hot and cold drinks. The company is also dropping its charge on milk alternatives, meaning that oat and rice-coconut milk, will be offered free of charge alongside soya milk.

These changes are part of Pret’s January new menu launch which will also see new salads, sandwiches and toasties available in shops. This includes a Hummus & Falafel Mezze Salad (launching 21 January), a Smoky Carrot & Falafel on Rye sandwich and an Asian Style Chicken Box.
