Much loved pub landlady, Jean Williams, 74 was presented a unique award by Punch Pubs & Co as she celebrates her 60th year working within the pub industry.
In recognition of Williams' incredible service, Punch Pubs Operations Director, Neil Dawson (pictured right) presented her with a commemorative glass award.
Having lived in pubs since the age of 8, Williams (pictured left) began learning the trade at 14 and hasn’t looked back since. She took over as landlady at The Griffin Inn, Gresford near Wrexham, Wales, in 1973.
The Griffin Inn has links back to the 13th century and is a firm favourite with real ale enthusiasts. Commenting on her pub's success and time in the industry, Jean said 'It's unusual to have run a pub for so long. I don't know what the secret is. This is a very traditional pub and I think they like that.”
Williams prides herself on running a pub with no gimmicks and explained, 'There's no food, no jukebox and we don't have Sky Sports.' Instead, it focuses on being a haven for those who wish to come in, relax and have a chat with friends over a pint.
'Beer prices are one of the few things that have changed during her tenure – with a pint costing just 14 pence when she originally took over!
Asked if she has any plans to retire yet, Williams said, “It’s a tough life but I have enjoyed it and I like what I do. The customers have been very good in supporting me over the years, but I suppose that I will have to retire sometime.”
