Midcounties Co-op opening Powys shopping centre after £780k investment

The Midcounties Co-operative is opening the new Powys shopping centre next week following a £780k investment in the transformation of the former Harry Tuffins site.

The revamped 40,000 sq ft Churchstoke Shopping Centre will be celebrated with an event on 27 May and at the heart of the newly refurbished centre is a Midcounties Co-operative Food supermarket (similar site pictured).

The store will offer a wide selection of products including a ‘Best of Our Counties’ range, which supports local suppliers by showcasing food and drink products from producers based in the county and neighbouring counties.

The Shopping Centre will also feature a number of new and existing concessions, whilst maintaining its extensive Non Food and pound shop area, Post Office and petrol filling station. The new additions at the Centre include an M&Co clothing outlet, Archie Lily’s café, The Plant Centre and butcher Jamie Wards, helping to provide a range of services for the community all under one roof.

The store was purchased as part of the Harry Tuffins Group acquisition in 2012 and this investment follows upgrades of the stores in Holywell and Ludlow and the replacement store at Cleobury Mortimer. There will be significant investment in the remaining sites in Machynlleth and Knighton during 2018.

At the Churchstoke Shopping Centre celebration event on 27th May, customers will be able to enjoy activities such as food sampling and face painting, with a balloon artist, magician and bouncy castle also at the Centre. There will be a range of special offers and discounts on the day, including 15% off everything at M&Co and 5 litres of free fuel for shoppers spending £40 in the Society’s supermarket.

Vince Sage, store manager at The Midcounties Co-operative Food in Churchstoke, said: “We have made some really exciting changes to the store to increase the product range on offer to our customers, including the introduction of our quality Irresistible range. We’ve also maintained elements much loved by the local community, including the café, Sunday Market and Sam the parrot will be moving into a new cage.

“The Churchstoke Shopping Centre is ideal for local shoppers that want to access a great range of products and services all in one place, and also an ideal stop off point for those travelling to the coast. We’re really looking forward to welcoming the community through the doors later this month to see everything the new Shopping Centre has to offer.”

Roy Delves, the former owner of the Harry Tuffins business, said: “It’s fantastic to see the investment that The Midcounties Co-operative has made in the store, whilst retaining the elements that the people in the area require and rely on. I am very much looking forward to seeing the store when it’s completed at the end of the month”.
