Scottish ice-cream maker scoops supply deal for 270 Co-op stores

Hamilton-based ice-cream maker has scooped a contract to supply over 270 Co-op food stores across Scotland. Equi’s Ice Cream. The firm, which is set to mark its centenary after opening its first cafe in Hamilton in 1922, will supply two flavours to the community retailer.

The family-owned firm, run by Managing Director, David Equi (pictured), will supply its Double Cream Vanilla and Isle of Skye Sea Salt & Caramel Ice Creams – which use locally sourced ingredients, including milk and cream from its home town. It estimates that sales could exceed over 70,000 units in the first 12 months.

Chris Law, Head of Sales and Marketing at Equi’s, said, “This is great news, and we have been delighted with the response from Co-op’s customers. We are proud of our Scottish roots, with the centenary of our first ice cream parlour opening in Hamilton just a few years away.

'We are delighted to work with the Co-op, operating in local communities across Scotland, this is our largest such contract. It not only builds brand awareness and reach, but grows retail ice cream sales of our premium, special occasion, product. An important development for the business, which can protect against the traditional seasonalities associated with the sector.”

Simon Dryell, head of local sourcing at the Co-op, explained, “We are delighted to work with Equi’s with its mix of history, passion, innovation and quality which goes into its ice cream. Not to mention its own commitment to sourcing locally wherever possible.

'Our Members and customers tell us that they care about food provenance and trust, and we are dedicated to delivering just that.

'As a community retailer, the Co-op is committed to investing in its local communities, exploring new ways to showcase, celebrate and support great quality locally produced food and drink.”
