The Halal Guys to launch in UK in 2019

From humble beginnings as a New York City hot dog cart to a world-renowned international restaurant group, The Halal Guys is to launch next year in the UK, its first in Europe.

March 2019 will see The Halal Guys land in the West End’s Leicester Square followed by two more locations in London in 2019.

ITICO F+B Limited has the development rights for all of the UK with plans to open the first three locations before the end of 2019. 20 locations will launch across the country over the next five years.

The Halal Guys menu takes a simple stance. Choose from a sandwich or platter in four equally tasty versions - chicken, beef, chicken & beef or vegan-friendly falafel - served with a selection of toppings and, of course, the iconic, secret recipe white and hot sauces.

The brand launched in 1990 when Egyptian immigrants Mohammed Abouelenein, Ahmed Elsaka and Abedelbaset Elsayed opened a hot dog cart in the middle of New York City. They soon realised there was huge demand from Muslim cab drivers looking for a good, fast halal meal, and swapped the hot dog for halal food.

The Halal Guys started franchising in 2015 in the Philippines and very quickly over the next three years sold over 450 sites in six countries, making it one of the fastest growing chains in the world. The first franchise location opened in Chicago in September 2015 and since then they have opened over 80 franchise locations and will surpass 100 in early 2019.

Over 325,000 orders are placed at The Halal Guys sites every month, using some 188 tons of chicken, 129 tons of beef and 63 tons of rice.

Emma Cousins of CDG Leisure, which secured the Irving Street restaurant, has been appointed by The Halal Guys to oversee its ongoing property strategy in London. CDG will work closely with ITICO to source future sites in the city.

Jan Van Delden, franchisee and partner says, “Based on average sales per year per unit, the brand would be the second highest grossing ethnic restaurant group. We know this concept translates and this is an extremely important and exciting time for The Halal Guys!”
