Argyll & Bute historic hotel seeks new ownership

The Royal Hotel in Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute, has been brought to market by Southworth Europe Ltd, through Christie & Co..

The Royal Hotel holds a special place in Campbeltown history, built in 1907 by local proprietor Archibald Johnston, the hotel was designed by renowned architect James Monro of Glasgow, who would later design the Grand Hotel in St. Andrews. After years of economic difficulties in the area, the aging property eventually had to close its doors.

In 2008, David Southworth and Joe Deitch purchased both The Ugadale and Royal Hotels, along with the Machrihanish Dunes Golf Course, and thus began the development of the Village at Machrihanish Dunes, which includes both hotels and the Ugadale Golf Cottages.

Southworth Europe has no plans to sell its holdings in Machrihanish, which include the Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club, The Ugadale Hotel and Cottages, The Old Clubhouse Pub and The Kintyre Club.

Today, The Royal Hotel makes the most of its unmatched waterfront location overlooking Campbeltown Harbour. Guests at The Royal enjoy unforgettable views of the harbour area, with its stone piers and scenic walkways.

The hotel features all the contemporary conveniences and amenities you’d expect in a modern luxury accommodation, set in surroundings steeped in old-world elegance.

With its 23 sumptuously appointed guest rooms, The Royal is also home to The Black Sheep Pub and the elegant Harbourview Grille, recognised as one of the finest dining establishments in all of Kintyre.

David Southworth, Founder and CEO of Southworth Development, commented, “We love The Royal Hotel and what it has become, but we have made the decision to list the property for sale because it will afford us some operating efficiencies and is not vital to our operations in Machrihanish.

'We will be very careful as to whom we would sell the hotel, as its future remains important to us. There will be no loss of jobs within the community and we truly hope that whoever the next owner is will have even more resources to attract added visitors to the area.”

Stuart Drysdale, Director at Christie & Co added, “The Royal Hotel is now well established in the town and enjoys excellent reviews of the bedroom accommodation and newly refurbished public space. We expect high levels of demand from home based and international hotel operators.”
