Revamped Bristol pub comes to market

The Portwall Tavern, a popular and successful pub steeped in history which is located in Redcliffe, Bristol, has been brought to market via Christie & Co.

The Portwall Tavern, which has become available for the first time in almost two decades, dates back to 1847 and is situated at the edge of where Bristol’s Old Portwall once stood, close to Bristol Temple Meads railway station.

The area enjoys steady footfall and is currently undergoing significant regeneration with the development of new build apartments, offices, and restaurant/leisure opportunities, which will help to increase footfall further.

The recently renovated pub is set over three storeys. Guests are greeted by an outside drinking area on Portwall Lane before entering the main bar on the ground floor. A manager’s office and accommodation is located on the first and second floors and there is a parking space for two cars to the rear.

The Portwall Tavern has been run by Andy Shaw for the past 18 years and he has made the decision to sell the lease to embark on a new adventure. The property is available by way of assignment of the existing free-of-tie lease, which expires in October 2036.

There is fantastic potential for the new owner to increase revenue by expanding the food offering as well as hiring out the first floor terrace for private events, subject to the necessary planning permissions. The current manager’s flat could also be refurbished and used as a private rental or for holiday lets.

Saoirse Duddy, Business Agent in Christie & Co’s Hospitality team is handling the sale, and comments “The Portwall Tavern is well-known amongst Bristolians old and young, and the landlord has continued to run a successful trade throughout his 18 years there.

'The pub provides the opportunity for a tenacious and ambitious operator to take on an already established and successful business, with scope to increase profits and create a roof terrace with the required planning permission. I would encourage any interested parties to arrange a viewing quickly to avoid missing out on such a fantastic opportunity.”
