Pret a Manger to train female prisoners to become baristas

Pret a Manger is to train prisoners to become baristas, which could lead to them securing a job when they are released.

The high street chain is sending staff into prisons to give coffee training workshops at in-house jail coffee shops.

The new scheme is to be trialled at women’s prisons, which house 4,000 inmates in 12 jails, with the aim to rehabilitate those who take part.

In December last year, there had been plans to install two machines and an in-house coffee shop at HMP Holloway, a 590-capacity women's jail in north London.

However, the plans were scrapped after the Government decided to close the jail, the largest women's prison in Europe - which is due to close this summer.

Regardless, the partnership scheme between the Prison Service and a successful high street brand, is seen as a 'pioneering' and has led to its continuation.
