AF Blakemore to sell wholesale division

Black Country-based AF Blakemore, the family-owned food distribution and Spar supermarket company, has announced it's to sell off the wholesale division following a strategic review.

The wholesale arm of the country is made up of 12 cash & carry depots and has 520 staff manning them. These employees should be moving to whichever company buys them, however, problems may arise if a buyer wanted to close some of the sites.

Joint group managing director, Geoff Hallam stated, 'The move away from the cash & carry sector will allow the company to invest further across its wider business and focus its future strategy upon its remaining divisions, as it continues to drive innovation within the retail and wholesale distribution sectors.

'The company has now informed colleagues and will support all 520 of those impacted throughout this process. Further information will be provided as the situation progresses over the coming weeks.'

The news follows the company's celebration of 100 years in business last year.
