Warburtons crumpet production seriously hit by CO2 shortage

Bolton-based baking firm, Warburton's has stopped production at two of its four plants as it has run out of carbon dioxide, which is used to package crumpets.

The company is the UK's largest producer of crumpets, supplying 1.5 million crumpets a week to UK consumer.

The much-loved crumpets are packed using carbon dioxide to give them a longer shelf life and to prevent mould.

The London and Burnley factories have completely run out of CO2 and the group's Stockton site is getting irregular supplies.

A spokeswoman for Warburton's has confirmed that the company is only running at around 50% of its usual production.
