Amazon pulls plug on London restaurant delivery service

Amazon's restaurant food delivery brand, Amazon Restaurants was set to go head to head with the likes of Deliveroo when it launched its London service in 2016.

However, the competition has proved too much as the online delivery giant is to close the service in the capital on 3 December. The news was announced in an email to the service’s customers.

Amazon Restaurants was available exclusively to Prime subscribers who could pay £1.99 to have food delivered within an hour from over 200 London restaurants.

Amazon promised to deliver meals to 21 London postcodes within an hour, and the service was free of hidden service fees and menu mark-ups.

London was the 12th city to offer Amazon's restaurant delivery service. It was first launched in Seattle in September 2015 and has since expanded across the US to cities including New York City, Manhattan and Chicago.
