SSP £180m Spanish airport deal sees new bars & restaurants open

Travel location food and beverage operator, SSP has opened a selection of new bars and restaurants at Spain’s two largest airports. The latest launches follow the award of new contracts in Barcelona and, for the first time, Madrid.

SSP has signed an eight-year deal worth over €200m (£180m) over the contract life to increase the number of units it operates at Barcelona-El Prat Airport from two to seven. The move saw the company open the airport’s first Starbucks coffee shop in November, with visitors now able to purchase the brand’s signature barista-made coffee.

Travellers are also being treated to a true taste of Spain with two Catalan favourites. La Tramoia opened in October and serves mouth-watering authentic Spanish dishes including tapas and paella, while Pannus will offer a wide selection of sandwiches, pastries, cakes and other sweet and savoury treats from May 2019.

Joining them at the airport are two new concepts from Michelin star chefs Javier and Sergio Torres – Alas, a fine dining restaurant launched in November, and Slam, a grab and go unit opening in May 2019. Completing the line-up is a new unit from Spanish charcuterie outlet Enrique Tomás launched this month, while local concept Cooofebar will open in May 2019.

At Madrid Barajas Airport, SSP will open a healthy food concept called Mama Campo this month. The grab and go outlet, located at the airport’s Terminal 4, will offer a varied selection of healthy food and drink options, including organic dishes, fresh fruit and cold pressed juices, made with locally sourced and eco-friendly ingredients. The launch builds on SSP’s successful introduction of the Mama Campo concept at Ibiza Airport.

Blanca Ripoll, managing director of SSP Spain, said, “We are delighted to be given the opportunity to introduce customers travelling through Madrid and Barcelona to this outstanding range of food and beverage brands. The mix we are offering is based on our detailed knowledge of the travelling consumer in Spain, coupled with our understanding of regional trends. These latest wins will allow us to develop and strengthen our highly successful business in Spain.”
