CAMRA asks Tesco to stop converting pubs into stores

Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has written to Tesco calling on it to stop converting pubs into stores. The Bristol & District CAMRA group is also asking Tesco to pull out of potential conversions of the Bristol House in Weston-super-Mare and the Foresters in Westbury-on-Trym.

The retail giant has said it only opens stores in pubs that are no longer trading and claims it is bringing renewed life to disused buildings. The Bristol House in Milton Road, which is owned by Enterprise Inns, has been closed since last month.

Local residents have launched the Save the Bristol House Inn and say No to Change of Use and No to Tesco campaign after learning the retail giant is interested in turning the site into a Tesco Express.

CAMRA also understands that the Foresters in Westbury-on-Trym is also in Tesco's sights, as the pub has been subject to a planning application from the chain to install air-conditioning units.

The Fellowship in Filton Avenue, Horfield has already been acquired by Tesco, with the store scheduled to open in November.

Formed in 1971, CAMRA is an independent, voluntary organisation campaigning for real ale, community pubs and consumer rights.
