Roti King to open second restaurant at Battersea Power Station

Roti King is to open its second restaurant, and first South London site, in Circus West Village, the first chapter in the regeneration of Battersea Power Station, this spring.

Roti King has gained an incredibly loyal following from its original Euston site over the last 8 years of trading and fans will welcome this second site in a vibrant new riverside neighbourhood for London and with the benefit of a booking system.

From its beginnings as a street food concept, Roti King adapted into the site that we know and love today. The authentic roti canai is made fresh every day, all by hand, right in front of customers, with the same traditional skill and theatre that head chef and owner Sugen Gopal learnt growing up.

The team encourages guests to eat with their hands and experience the food as they would on the streets of Malaysia, the home of Roti King’s particular style of roti.

Building on the popularity of their house made Roti, Sugen has added new dishes to the Battersea menu, with more vegetarian and vegan friendly items. Roti King is aiming to be the first in the UK to create Vegan Roti Canai, it is in development right but will be perfected for roll out for the opening at Battersea Power Station.

All Roti Canai will be available with four different options of kari; chicken, mutton, dahl and fish as well as the stuffed Murtabak with a variety of fillings. Dishes served with fragrant coconut rice include Beef Rendang and Ayam Goreng Berempah.

The South East Asian staple of Nasi Goreng will also feature. Laksa, noodle dishes and a selection of sides round off the savoury section of the menu. Condensed Milk, Coconut Jam (Kaya) and Banana roti are the sweet options.

As with the Euston site, food takes centre stage at the Battersea Power Station outpost. A stripped back aesthetic will allow diners to focus on the exceptional quality of the dishes.

One key difference separates the two sites; for the first time customers will be able to book tables at Roti King, with half the seating left for walk-ins. Euston is famous for its 45 minutes queues, making it one of the hardest places in town to get a walk-in table.

However, Roti King was always imagined as a restaurant for all; foodies in the know, workers on a quick lunch break and students after an affordable and delicious meal. A booking system will allow more customers to introduce themselves to Roti King.

South Asian beer by the bottle alongside canned wines make up the simple but carefully paired alcohol range. Takeaway & Delivery, for the local catchment, will be on offer at Battersea and guests are encouraged to order and enjoy their food by the water during the summer months.

Sugen Gopal was born and raised in Ipoh in Malaysia, where his parents’ love of authentic Malaysian cuisine was passed down to him via the family business. The success of the restaurant in Ipoh and his entrepreneurial flair led Sugen to bring his food to a wider audience. After a move to the UK, Sugen created the first iteration of Roti King at Oriental City (now Bang Bang Oriental) in Colindale.

After the site was shut by developers, Sugen took the opportunity to open his own restaurant in Euston. In 2014 Roti King opened its doors; no signage, no real menus at first, no airs and graces, just an incredible, authentic and accessible product. Following a rave review in The Guardian the same year, Roti King was cemented as a must visit foodie destination for those in the know.

Gopal said,“There is nowhere in the UK that makes Roti Canai the way we do at Roti King. Our attention to detail, fresh British ingredients and a few secret techniques makes this the most authentic place to eat roti in the UK.

'I am beyond thrilled to see my cuisine and heritage becoming so popular in the UK, this opening at Battersea Power Station represents the start of a very exciting period for Roti King”.

Sam Cotton, Head of Leasing at Battersea Power Station Development Company, said,
“Battersea Power Station is emerging as one of the most unique and exciting retail, leisure, food and drink destinations in the capital.

'We are delighted that Roti King has recognised this and decided to open its first restaurant in South London here.

' With the development’s strong links to Malaysia through our shareholders, we are thrilled to bring delicious Malaysian cuisine to the vibrant riverside neighbourhood that has been created at Battersea Power station for all to enjoy.”

Roti King joins a line-up of over 20 bars, restaurants, cafés, fitness and leisure offerings already open in Circus West Village at Battersea Power Station including Gordon Ramsay’s Street Pizza, Francesco Mazzei’s Fiume, The Turbine Theatre, Be Military Fit, DNA VR, Black Sheep Coffee, Boom Cycle and The Cinema in The Arches.

The thriving riverside neighbourhood usually welcomes over three million people each year thanks to its annual events programme with highlights including the Light Festival which is currently on until 27th February.

Once open to the public from September 2022, Battersea Power Station will form the centrepiece of a new ‘15-minute’ live, work and play neighbourhood, which will act as a town centre for the immediate and wider local communities, a new business quarter for the capital and a leisure destination for Londoners and international visitors.

The Power Station will be home to 254 residential apartments, over 100 retail shops, restaurants and cafés, including recently announced food and drink brands Le Bab, Where The Pancakes Are, Poke House, Clean Kitchen Club and Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen & Bar, a 20,000 sq ft food hall, office and unique event spaces, as well as a Chimney Lift Experience offering 360° views from the top of the Power Station’s North West chimney.
