Manchester Uni seeks construction firm for £140m project

The University of Manchester is looking for a contractor to build its £140m Fallowfield Student Accommodation Development as part of its £1bn campus masterplan.

The vision for the student residences in Fallowfield will see 3,000 modern, high-quality units created by replacing the existing properties, including demolition of the Owens Park Tower. Pricing of the units will be competitive for students, and include access to facilities in a new Student Hub.

The redevelopment work is being funded by the Mubadala Development Company which is owned by the Abu Dhabi government and run by Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak.

Construction work on the 29 hectare site is scheduled to start in June 2016 and last three years.

The University has already chosen Balfour Beatty, Laing O’Rourke and Sir Robert McAlpine to deliver the bulk of its £1bn capital programme through a partnership framework agreement.

The University of Manchester is the largest and most popular university in the UK and had an annual income of £886n in 2013/14. It has 20 academic schools and hundreds of specialist research groups undertaking pioneering multi-disciplinary teaching and research of worldwide significance.
