Costa begins work on new £36m roastery


VolkerFitzpatrick has begun work on Costa Coffee's brand new £36m state-of-the-art roastery facility in Essex.

The 85,000sq ft facility will be capable of producing 45,000 tonnes of coffee beans every year once the operations begin in early 2017, this will be nearly enough to producee the 464 million cups of coffee sold on Costas each year. Costa's existing facility in Lambeth, South London, can produce 10,000 tonnes of grounf coffee per year.

In addition to the roasting facilitiy, the site will also include a single-storey production unit which will house the company's coffe bean roasting ovens, a green bean silo area and a three-storey office accomodation.

Managing director Christopher Rogers said: 'This is an important milestone in a truly exciting project for both Costa and Basildon.
