Morrison doubles number of Scottish craft beer brands to meet demand

Morrisons has brought in a raft of new breweries, to help keep up with the rising demand for Scottish beer in Scotland.

The supermarket is signing up 11 more Scottish breweries who will supply it with 30 new beers. They include brewers such as Cairngorm Brewery and Black Isle Brewery as well as newer innovative breweries such as Alechemy and St. Andrews Brewing Co.

Eighteen brands will be available this week as part of the supermarket’s Scottish Beer Festival, which celebrates the best of Scottish beers and encourages beer drinkers to try out new breweries. The remaining twelve will be added the range on 26 September.

They include Lerwick Brewery’s Azure (pictured), which is a light ale with a refreshing floral and elderflower taste, and Black Isle Brewery’s Red Kite, an amber coloured ale which is brewed with organic crystal and pale malt and bucketful’s of whole flower hops.

Morrisons beer buyer, James Child said, “We’ve been listening hard to our Scottish customers and they told us that they wanted to see even more beers produced by independent Scottish breweries in our stores.

“We’ve responded by hunting out the best and most interesting brewers and beers that Scotland has to offer - from Loch Lomond Brewery’s Bonnie n’ Blond to Tempest Brewing Co.’s Pale Armadillo. We hope our customers will be as excited as we are.”

Dom Metcalfe, Sales Director from Black Isle Brewery, said, “Black Isle Brewery are proud to get three beers listed with Morrisons for the very first time. Morrisons has always had a reputation for having an excellent and diverse range of beers from the UK and worldwide. This is now further enhanced with added depth to the regional Scottish range! Cheers!”

Steve Wallace, Head of Commercial at the Food & Drink Hub who worked with Morrisons on the project, said, “The craft beer scene in Scotland is thriving because of the number of breweries producing high quality liquid. Scottish beer customers want to try the vast array of different styles of beers being brewed by both established and new breweries alike.

'Morrisons have always had a strong heritage in selling a diverse range of quality beers and we are delighted to have worked with Morrisons and the Scottish brewing community to enhance this range further.”
