Plans proposed to turn Bodmin Jail into hotel

Proposals are being considered to demolish buildings at Bodmin Jail one of Cornwalls major visitor attractions and create a 63-bed hotel.

Mallino Development Ltd, based in Surrey, has submitted documents to Cornwall Council related to a plan to 'revitalise' Bodmin Jail.

The company is proposing to provide a hotel and a car park to the historic Cornish attraction on Berrycoombe Road.

The prison, which opened in 1779, includes a number of grade two-listed buildings which comprise the civil and Naval prison wings of the old Bodmin Jail.

Under the proposal, these buildings would be restored and turned into a 63-bedroom hotel. The former hospital wing enclosure would be rebuilt and the existing museum renovated.

Mallino Development Ltd, as well as Twelve Architects, Sarner International, Montagu Evans, Arup, Turner & Townsend, and Astute Fire, which are also part of the project, also plan to create a 63-space car park within the former prison yard.
