Award-winning Sub Cult to launch perm sandwich shop in the City

Award-winning sandwich kings, Ben Chancellor and Gareth Phillips have announced their much-anticipated first bricks and mortar Sub Cult site will open ii the heart of the City this June.

Located on London’s famous Watling Street, just 5 mins’ walk from Bank station and under the gaze of St. Paul’s cathedral; the street is where the legendary Queen Boudicca is believed to have been defeated by the Romans. The site will offer 14 covers inside, as well as a takeaway counter for those busy City workers looking for breakfast or lunch on-the-go.

The inaugural shop builds upon five years of street food experience, over which sandwich heroes Ben and Gaz have served up the capital’s most popular subs from their gazebo, ‘Soul Roller’ van and more recently two shipping containers.

Hungry Londoners have now eaten their wares at their previous outposts at Broadgate, and Boxpark plus Maltby Street, Streetfeast, and Brockley Markets; where the boys honed their craft and built a loyal customer base and strong social media following. This experience has laid the foundations for the boys to step up to the plate and bring their award winning fare to the City massive.

Open Monday to Friday from 7am, Sub Cult’s new City shop will offer gourmet hot sub sandwiches made fresh to order using Rinkoff’s U.S. deli-style sub rolls. Breakfast will be served daily from opening until 11am, signature brekkie subs on the menu will include the ‘Skandi Sub’ – oak smoked salmon, cream cheese, beetroot kimchi and dill; the vegan
‘Sub-Conscious’ – seared seitan, harissa and roasted peppers; and the Sub Cult take on the classic english fry up, the ‘Sub Contractor’ – streaky bacon, white pudding and a baked egg.

Then, weekdays from 11am - 6pm, customers can enjoy fan favourites such as the ‘The Rodeo Sub’ – bavette steak, truffle mayo, onion jam, chilli oil and parmesan or the award
winning ‘Sub Marine’- slow cooked pork, marinated calamari, salsa verde mayonnaise crackling and torched scallops, hand-dived sustainably in Brixham, Devon by Brittannia Shellfish.

New subs on the menu include the ‘Subano’, Sub Cult’s take on a Cubano, with roast pork, honey glazed ham, swiss cheese, smoked chilli mayonnaise and Pama Creations pickles; and the ‘Queen Bee’, a new special paying homage to Queen Boudicca, which comprises slow roasted chicken, smoked ham hock, wild garlic aioli, Wilderbee’s Urban Chilli Honey with a cheddar and chive crumb.

Sub Cult’s ‘Subterranean’, named ‘Best Vegetarian’ at the British Street Food Awards in 2015 and featuring braised Portobello mushrooms, truffle mayonnaise, stilton, roast garlic and thyme will also be on the menu; alongside the vegan ‘The Black & Blue’ - featuring seared Seitan, braised Portobello mushroom, vegan Hellman’s truffle mayo, chilli oil, onion jam and vegan blue cheese from Brixton vegan cheesemongers La Fauxmagerie.

Morning pastries from family-run east end bakery Rinkoff’s, sweet treats from streetfood stablemates A Pie Party, plus salads and tater tots echoing Sub Cult’s NYC-inspired roots, complete the menu.

Ahead of the launch, Co-founder and Director Ben Chancellor commented, “This really feels like a coming of age moment for the Sub Cult family. From a humble gazebo to our van to kitchen residencies and shipping containers, to now arrive at this! Our first bricks and mortar premises.

'A lot of dreams have been fulfilled with this venture so it’s a pinch yourself moment to be anchoring at such a buzzing spot in ye olde City Of London. We can’t wait to serve up our Subs to our fans and new customers, with an appropriate soundtrack of sub culture classics, of course!”

Over the last five years, Sub Cult’s sandwiches have garnered a cabinet full of awards and accolades including Time Out’s ‘London’s Best Sandwiches’ and ‘Top Ten Streetfood Traders’ along with inclusions in ‘London’s Best Sandwiches’ by the Evening Standard, to name but a few. Ben and Gaz have also won two British Street Food Awards including ‘Best Sandwich’ and have collaborated with several Michelin starred chefs, including Tom Sellers and Tom Aitkens.

Sub Cult is proud to work with the best of London’s suppliers including Flock + Herd butchers, Britannia Shellfish and use bread from Rinkoff’s Bakery, with gluten-free bread provided by Rana’s Bakery.
