Papa John's pizza chain has announced plans to shut down 43 of its restaurants across the UK as part of a strategic review of its operations. Additionally, the company aims to focus on developing innovative store formats moving forward.
The takeaway chain has stated that the 'underperforming' sites will be closed by mid-May, following consultations with team members.
The company has not yet confirmed the number of staff who will be affected by these closures.
Papa John's operates more than 5,900 sites worldwide, with 450 of those located in the UK. The UK represents its second-largest market, following the US.
Earlier this month, the chain disclosed that the sites marked for closure had contributed to two-thirds of its operating losses in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Chris Phylactou, managing director at Papa Johns UK, said: 'Our priority is our team members, who will be fully supported throughout this process.
'Our goal is to work with impacted team members and attempt to find redeployment opportunities where available.
'We understand the impact this will have on our team members and are committed to supporting them during this time.'
He further mentioned that the closures would enable the company to redirect resources into other locations, thereby supporting 'long-term growth.'
Papa John's intends to revamp its UK menu by introducing fresher ingredients, new products, and value offerings.
The company announced its intention to open sites that deviate from its traditional stores, with plans to partner with large retail partners to be revealed in the coming months. Additionally, Papa John's already has a presence in holiday parks and attractions across the UK.
