Greggs & Too Good To Go saves one million bags of food from going to waste

Food-to-go retailer, Greggs, and the world’s largest surplus food app, Too Good To Go, have today reported the partnership has prevented more than one million bags of food from going to waste in the UK.

This achievement demonstrates the success of Greggs’ partnership with Too Good To Go which forms part of its ongoing pledge to reduce food waste and build a safer planet, while offering delicious customer favourites at affordable prices.

Too Good To Go is a social impact company working with companies to prevent food waste by allowing customers to purchase surplus food from restaurants, convenience retailers and producers in an affordable way.

Users download the free Too Good To Go app and search for nearby businesses that offer unsold food, where they can then purchase a ‘Magic Bag’ filled with delicious food at a third of its original retail value, collect it at an allotted time and enjoy.

Greggs’ partnership with Too Good To Go launched in early 2021 and to date more than 1,200 Greggs sites across the UK are available to rescue surplus food from.

Too Good To Go users can expect to find a variety of items in each Magic Bag rescued from participating Greggs locations including the infamous sausage rolls, delicious sandwiches, wraps, doughnuts and cookies

Through saving one million Magic Bags of surplus food from going to waste, Greggs and Too Good To Go have collectively saved the equivalent CO2e that it takes to power 1,641 flights around the world.

“We’re thrilled to be partners with a British staple like Greggs and to have reached such an incredible milestone so quickly,” said Sophie Trueman, Managing Director for Too Good To Go in the UK & Ireland. “There are so many benefits to preventing delicious food from going to waste - retailers can recover their sunk costs, while consumers can access great food at an affordable price.

'Everyone wins and together we can do good for our planet too. I’m incredibly excited to see our partnership continue to flourish and rescue even more Greggs favourites from going to waste.”

Gillian Long, Greggs Retail Operations Director, said, “Today, we are delighted to celebrate that our customers have saved over 1 million Magic Bags packed with Greggs favourites. Whilst we do everything that we can to redistribute surplus food to those in need, our partnership with Too Good To Go really helps to ensure that we keep as much food as possible from going to waste and continue delivering on our food waste commitments.

'As announced in the Greggs Pledge, we are committed to creating 25% less food waste by 2025 than we did in 2018 and we will continue to work towards 100% of excess food going to those most in need.”
