Ocado retains title as UK’s fastest-growing retailer

Ocado has achieved a new record market share of 2.2%, with sales rising 15.8% over the 12 weeks ending 30 November, according to the latest Worldpanel by Numerator (formerly Kantar) data.

Meanwhile, discounter Lidl continues its strong performance, posting double-digit sales growth of 10.2% for the ninth consecutive month and reaching a market share of 8.1%.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s reported sales growth of 4.7% and 5.1%, respectively. Tesco remains Britain’s largest grocer with a 28.3% market share, while Sainsbury’s holds 16%.

Discounter Aldi recorded a 4.1% increase in sales, though its market share stayed steady at 10.5%.

Waitrose and Iceland both saw sales rise by 4%, while their market shares remained unchanged at 4.4% and 2.3%, respectively.

Asda and Co-op saw sales decline by 4.3% and 1.4%, respectively, with current market shares of 11.5% and 5.3%.

Morrisons, meanwhile, recorded a 2.1% sales increase and holds an 8.3% share of the market.

Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, said: “Retailers are pulling out all the stops to win shoppers over as they gear up for one of the most important trading periods of the year.

“With the cost of living still biting for many this Christmas, just under one third of all spending is on promotion as supermarkets find ways to shield shoppers from the impact of price rises.”

The data also showed that grocery inflation remained steady at 4.7% for the month ending 30 November, while take-home sales rose by 3.4% over the same period.

Christmas sales are forecast to surpass £13.6 billion in December, with 31.2% of spending on promoted items—up from 30% in November last year.
