Jamavar, the Mount Street restaurant specialising in regional Indian dishes, has been awarded its first Michelin star within a year of opening.
Founded in December 2016 by Dinesh Nair and his daughter, Samyukta, alongside Executive Chef Rohit Ghai, Jamavar joins 16 other restaurants awarded their first star in the Great Britain and Ireland Michelin Guide 2018.
As part of The Leela Palaces, Hotels & Resorts, a group of luxury hotels with properties throughout India, Jamavar was born from a love of the regional dishes of the Northern and Southern states, as well as recipes passed down from the matriarch of the Nair family and namesake of the hotel chain; Leela Nair.
Jamavar London is the first outpost outside of India, and brings the essence of the palaces to Mayfair with an effusive design, offset with colonial flourishes and patterns of Jamavar shawls, and hand cut marquetry.
Executive Chef Rohit Ghai has created a menu including dishes such as Malabar Prawns, sautéed king prawns, white turmeric, onions and curry leaves; Kid Goat Shami Kebab, black cardamom, mint chutney and chur chur paratha; Tulsi Chicken Tikka, sweet basil, pickled radish and raita; Dum Nalli Biryani, Hampshire lamb, basmati rice, crispy onions and fresh mint and Port Poached Pear, pear samosa, chocolate and pink peppercorn kulf.
Co-Founder Samyukta Nair commented, “We are absolutely thrilled at the news, it’s such a prestigious accolade to achieve and we feel so honoured to have been awarded a star.”
Ghai added, “We feel so humbled to have been recognized by such a respected association and I am very thankful to my team at Jamavar for all their hard work and support. We’d like to thank all those that have encouraged us since our opening last year.”
