Carillion school catering division given animal welfare award

Food & More, a Carillion company which caters to over 200 schools across the UK, has been awarded a ‘Good Egg’ Award by Compassion in World Farming, in recognition of their commitment to laying hen welfare.

Compassion's Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards recognise food and catering companies that are making it their policy to produce and source higher welfare eggs, meat and dairy produce.

Compassion has run its flagship scheme, the Good Egg Award, since 2007 to celebrate organisations, like Food & More, that source only cage-free eggs. The programme estimates that over 287 million hens, chickens, pigs and dairy cows and calves, are now set to benefit each year as a result of award winners' policies.

Brian Keers, Head of Catering Development at Carillion, said: 'We're delighted that Food & More has been recognised by Compassion in World Farming with this award. As a trusted catering partner to hundreds of schools and businesses in a number of UK regions, we have invested to improve the quality of our meals, and we are passionate about where our ingredients come from. Above all, we want to ensure that our food is tasty, healthy, and ethically sourced.'

Tracey Jones, Director of Food Business at Compassion in World Farming said: 'It is so great to see Food & More taking animal welfare into consideration as part of their sourcing policy. Higher welfare produce isn't just the responsibility of the large corporations, but something that can be achieved at all levels. Well done to Food & More - keep up the good work!'

In addition to the 'Good Egg Award' Food & More also holds the Food for Life Bronze Catering Mark for 115 primary schools, guaranteeing a commitment to fresh ingredients which are free from undesirable additives and trans fats, are better for animal welfare and comply with government School Food Standards.
