Calthorpe Estates given go-ahead to complete £200m Pebble Mill scheme

Developer, Calthorpe Estates has been given the green light to complete the final phase of Birmingham’s £200 million Pebble Mill scheme. The firm has been granted planning consent for a healthcare facility on the site of the BBC’s former city base. The medical and life science hub will create more than 1,000 jobs when complete.

Projects already approved at Pebble Mill include a new dental hospital and school of dentistry – the first new dental hospital for the UK in nearly 40 years. Bupa also has planning permission to build a 62-bed en-suite care home at Pebble Mill. And healthcare firm Circle is to construct a private hospital.

Calthorpe’s development director, Ralph Minott said, “Construction is under way on the dental hospital and school of dentistry and the final infrastructure works are being completed on site. Work is expected to start on the Bupa home later in the spring and the regeneration of Pebble Mill is gathering serious momentum, while raising the bar as a pinnacle of healthcare provision.”

Scheduled to open in autumn next year, the new facility will attract 600 students and more than 100,000 visitors a year.
