Whitbread plans to build Premier Inn at Manchester Airport

Premier Inn’s parent company, Whitbread, in collaboration with Mix Manchester, has announced plans to establish the largest Premier Inn hotel in northern England at Manchester Airport.

The new 276-bedroom Premier Inn hotel is set to increase the brand’s room capacity in the Manchester area by over 50%. This facility will serve Manchester Airport, the UK's third busiest airport, which connects to more than 200 domestic and international destinations.

The upcoming Premier Inn hotel at Manchester Airport will operate on a leasehold basis and will showcase a range of the brand's latest style bedrooms, including the popular Premier Plus rooms. Additionally, the hotel will feature 'The Social' space on the ground floor, which aims to enhance the stylish offerings of the brand.

Whitbread’s investment in Manchester reflects its strategic focus on expanding and optimising its hotel network in the city to better meet customer needs. In addition to the new 276-bedroom Premier Inn at Manchester Airport, the company has secured a freehold development site for another 229-bedroom Premier Inn this year. They have also sold its Deansgate Locks hotel for redevelopment.

Whitbread acquisition manager Jill Anderson stated, “We are serious about continuing to grow Premier Inn across the north of England and offer the flexibility, security, and development expertise to acquire large hotel sites as we have done at Manchester Airport.

“Securing what will become the largest Premier Inn in the north of England is a significant moment for Whitbread and one which we are proud to have delivered. With passenger numbers growing strongly at the airport, I’m sure it will be a popular choice for our customers when we open the doors and start welcoming our guests.”

Currently, the Premier Inn Manchester City Centre (Portland Street) is the largest Premier Inn in northern England, boasting 233 guest bedrooms. Meanwhile, Manchester Airport has seen a significant increase in passenger traffic, recording 29.6 million passengers in the 12 months leading up to August 12, 2024.

The new Premier Inn at Rochdale Road is expected to welcome guests in 2026.This development is part of Whitbread's ongoing expansion efforts, which recently included the opening of a new hotel at Paddington Station in London, which opened last month.
